STEP 1: DAY SAILING or a taster START YACHTING Weekend for an introduction to yacht sailing in the sheltered waters of the Solent or the beautiful Channel Islands. The fun and excitement of a short sailing experience may tempt you to the full COMPETENT CREW Course which covers basic boat handling skills, helmsmanship, sail handling, mooring and ropecraft.
STEP 2: DAY SKIPPER SHOREBASED teaches the basic navigation, seamanship and meteorology to take you to the next step.
STEP 3: DAY SKIPPER PRACTICAL for those who are already at Competent Crew level with at least 5 days seatime including 4 night hours and 100 sea miles. The course assumes basic navigation and sailing skills and builds on these teaching the skills of skippering.
STEP 4: COASTAL SKIPPER/YACHTMASTER SHOREBASED is a more advanced Course in navigation and meteorology suitable for those who have already completed the Day Skipper Course or who have a background of cruising or offshore racing experience. The Course will cover complex items of navigation at sea including tidal calculations, position fixing and passage planning, culminating in the level of knowledge required to progress to step 5.
STEP 5: COASTAL SKIPPER PRACTICAL is for those who are already at Day Skipper level with at least 300 miles logged, 8 night hours, some skippering experience and who are aiming to skipper a yacht on longer coastal and offshore passages by day and night. The course concentrates on effective passage planning, day and night pilotage, yacht handling in confined spaces under power and sail handling in emergency situations. If you wish you may then undertake the RYA/MCA COASTAL SKIPPER EXAMINATION or go to Step 6.
STEP 6: YACHTMASTER OFFSHORE PREPARATION WEEK
Experienced skippers who require RYA/MCA certification may join us for intensive preparation leading to examination at the end of the course.
